Let’s talk about DNS, no no, not Domain Name System, the hierarchical decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network but that very depressing race term, Did Not Start! This is a blog mainly about running after all!
This morning I’m lying in bed reading social media updates from friends getting ready to go out and run an event today. I should be sharing in their excitement and getting prepped myself but instead I’m lying here feeling slightly sorry for myself. I’ve been laid up with some bug for the past week and for once I’ve got my sensible head on. All week I’ve been suffering with headaches, high temperature, fatigue and a horrible cough. This has meant sleepless nights, a couple of days off work and no training. I got myself out yesterday for parkrun and managed a fairly respectable run regardless of the coughing, wheezing and spluttering. However, I certainly don’t feel up to the 21 mile race I had booked in for today. It would be a silly move to attempt it especially with the fact that I’m flying out to Malta to run in the marathon there next weekend! I need to keep looking at the bigger picture and not let pride come before a fall.
There is no shame in a DNS in my opinion. I know I’m still not well, forcing it could ruin my next race as well as ruin someone’s day if I needed assistance to get off the course. I will keep telling myself this, it is fine regardless of all the bravado running memes that state otherwise. I’m going to go volunteer instead and do something positive. I could go down and start and just run a bit of it before dropping out, but to be honest I think I’d rather just drop out and go down and support my friends running and see if there is anything I can do to help instead. Turn my negative into a positive.
